Mission: Riverview Hospital

Of fake sets and real tunnels

Riverview hostpital is huge. Made up of many buildings, it occupies about 200 acres on the side of a hill. Most of these buildings are still active, with patients still living on-site. There is also a very active security presence; we'd cruised the grounds by car a few times, and we saw security driving around all over the place- they even tailed us once!
After we left Woodlands prematurely, I hadn't gotten my hospital fix for the day. Jester suggested we hit the Crease Clinic at Riverview, which is a huge building rented by the hospital to filmcrews and others on occasion. We parked a distance away, and walked over through a treed area which the Wraiths use when they approach at night.
We climbed up to the grand front entrance, in the fading daylight. The Wraiths' planned entrance didn't work out at first, so we spent a good half hour circling the building looking for ways in. The doors were all locked shut, but none of the windows were smashed-out, and the building seemed to be in very good condition. Security hadn't even passed by once, despite our lingering presence, before Jester managed to get into the building in a most impressive way.

Once inside, he opened the main door for us, and we set to exploring. The Wraiths had been through the entire building, but I hadn't, and thus found every room and corner fascinating. We passed through the main hallway, ducked going past windows where we'd be visible to the outside, and walked about on some of the upper floors.
Film crews had been through, and coverted much of the building into sets. In one room, they'd actually constructed an entire apartment! Elsewhere, there was a row of fake jail cell doors, and many rooms had a fresh coat of paint.

I found the porcelain very cool in this building for some reason. The washrooms all had windows, and the light coming through, reflecting off the tiled floor and walls, was subdued, pleasant and just a tiny bit eeire. We reached a junction where the film sets stopped and the old building began, and i was surprised to see how little we'd covered, despite walking for over 20 minutes. The Crease clinic is a huge, several storey building, quite spread out. Pixie pointed out a room once used as a dormitory by the patients; small partitions divided the room, the bunks would have been located in between these.

We decided it was time to hit the basement, and descended a large, modern-looking staircase at the rear of the building. We came into the main lobby area again, and took a smaller set of stairs to the basement. We exited, directly from these stairs, into the basement tunnels.
The tunnels, running underneath the building above, consist mainly of a smaller hallway joining a longer one, roughly in the shape of a "T". The Wraiths told me that at one time, the short tunnel had connected to the other buildings in Riverview, but that the Crease clinic access had been bricked off some time ago. Even though it only roamed underneath one building, the tunnel was still impressive- dirty, with pipes overhead and intermittent fluorescent lighting. Small rooms branched off the long tunnel, and there was a gate at either end. The gates gave the tunnel a creepy air, resembling old jail cells. The tunnel itself seemed dark and quiet, with the paint peeling slowly off the walls and a smell of dirt. It was a fantastic place, and I shot many photos.

After hanging about in the tunnels for a while, we decided it was time to go. Although we had only covered a small section of the building, I'd had a good fix, and time was getting late. We left through the back door, and circled around the building to the front, so that I could grab some photos. We only saw security once, just before we reached the car. He didn't give us any trouble as we drove away, but Jester's car is probably on the "watch" list now.
